Project Brief

Sushi Enya, a celebrated Japanese sushi restaurant, began its journey with a flagship location in the bustling heart of Little Tokyo, Downtown LA, and has since expanded to include venues in Old Town Pasadena and Marina Del Rey. However, their current website fails to reflect the brand's essence due to its outdated design, lack of branding elements, and organizational deficiencies. To address this, Sushi Enya seeks a comprehensive website revamp project aimed at creating a visually captivating, user-friendly platform that accurately represents their brand identity while improving navigation and information organization. Through this initiative, Sushi Enya aims to enhance its online presence, attract new customers, and provide existing patrons with an exceptional digital experience reflective of their commitment to excellence in Japanese cuisine.

Current Site UX/UI Audit

The current Sushi Enya website lacks cohesive branding and design elements. Through my redesign efforts, I am committed to addressing the existing flaws in the site to ensure both the business and its customers are thoroughly satisfied.

There were many important details that were founded relating to the site.

- Navigation needs to be simplified and reevaluated to improve user experience.
- While consistent colors were applied, the site's design failed to align with the branding cohesively. Moreover, insufficient utilization of color and imagery hindered the site from effectively distinguishing itself. There is ample room for improvement in this aspect.
- Replacing the current purchasing process, which relies on a third party, with an built-in checkout page could benefit both the business and the customers
- Accessibility is a significant concern, particularly regarding color contrast on certain pages and the placement of text over images

Overview

Web Accessibility

Cons

- The font weight is low making it hard to read, font size could also be a little bigger.
- There is no alt text for the images that are used on the site making them not accessible.

Home Page Design

Pros

- The website is responsive through different screen sizes.
- The branding is consistent and minimal.
- The content and information is organized in different sections.

Cons

- Some of the navigation links on the site do not work.
- Social media icons are too small and are not labeled, so it is hard to know what each instagram icon links to.
- There are locations listed a little awkward on the home page.
- Location names are underlined making it seem like they are clickable, but nothing happens when clicked.
- Images are cropped weird and they do not align with the brand, which does not make the site captivating.

Navigation

Pros

- The site is easy to navigate, it is simple and there is minimal clicking.
- Clear organization of content on all pages.

Cons

- Some of the navigation links on the site do not work.
- The social media icons are too small.
- There are two instagram icons, but they are not labeled so it is difficult to determine where it leads to.

Mobile Responsiveness

Pros

- All content stacks accordingly when put into mobile view.
- Overall looks better in mobile view compared to web view.

The Process

After reviewing the audit findings, the upcoming website redesign will include the following implementations:

- Find a font with a heavier weight so that the text is easier to read.
- Enhance the site's visual identity by rebranding and incorporating additional images.
- Broaden the current color palette to strengthen branding and enhance accessibility.
- Begin the process of site mapping to establish a structured navigation system aimed at enhancing user experience.

Competitive Analysis

The competitive analysis for Sushi Enya focused on factors such as the type and popularity of similar restaurants. One common feature among these businesses is the inclusion of a reservation call-to-action (CTA).

1. Yume Sushi Bar

Yume Sushi Bar is a well-known establishment recognized for its fine Japanese cuisine and sophisticated dining setting. One notable strength of Yume Sushi Bar is their effective marketing strategy, leveraging the exposure gained from press coverage and blog features to promote their brand.

This website excels in showcasing images and effectively promoting their brand through its design. Additionally, they feature a call-to-action (CTA) for gift cards upon entering the site, informing users about their available gift card options. However, this may pose a challenge for users seeking to view the menu or make reservations, potentially impacting user-friendliness.

2. Sugar Fish

Sugarfish is a renowned sushi chain known for its traditional Japanese sushi served in an omakase-style dining experience. The first thing that can be seen is that the text is not accessible on certain areas because of how the lighting is on the background image.

An advantage of this website is its effective presentation of information, featuring a balanced mix of images and text to captivate users.

3. Omakase

Omakase is a renowned sushi restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine and commitment to quality. Guests enjoy a chef-curated selection of fresh sushi dishes in a sleek and modern setting.

The website is really organized and really easy to navigate. In terms of color the site is accessible except for the footer which does not pass the color contrast ratio.

My Next Steps ----->

I plan to finalize the prototype and present the redesign idea to the restaurant once all the details are polished.

Additionally, I'll conduct further research to improve the user flow for selecting food options and menu display. Enhancements to the purchasing flow will also be explored through research.
